Dear friends,

This was our fifth visit to Philadelphia . There were problems during the trip, on the way there and back. We lost our connecting flights and spent too many hours in airports, without the proper alimentation for Rosa . This gave her a cough. For a week we have been trying to cure her using homeopathic treatments. The process is slow but we don't want to use antibiotics as we don't want to affect her defenses. Rosa is very impatient because her cough has meant that her new program is starting a little later than planned.

Even with the bad trip, the stay in Philadelphia was a total success. We triumphed, after a period of hard work. Rosa surprised everyone with her advances, she participated actively and for the first time she made friends with other kids. She was simply….happy.

Evaluation (Monday):

Of course Rosa surprised everyone with her advances in facilitated communication and in the intellectual area. Also in her tactile capacity there were changes in her profile. She can now distinguish small details through her sense of touch.

She has had significant improvements in her walking, manual ability and language and is close to achieving the next development level in these areas.

It is more and more evident that Rosa uses the left side of her body better, having more problems on the right side.

Through what Rosa communicated using facilitated communication, the staff at the institutes could easily define that Rosa 's lesion is in the middle brain. She doesn't have a lesion in the cortex, or if she had one, it was very small.

This is Rosa 's problem with lesion in the middle brain: She has a great intelligence and understands everything, but when she most wants something, she can't do it or it turns out to the contrary.

It's for this reason that the social area has been so problematic for Rosa, but there have been advances. Rosa can now obey and follow small instructions more easily. And it was a pleasure to observe her behavior during the visit to the Institutes.

Kathy Myers designs Rosa's intellectual program

This time Leya gave us the summary. Rosa has grown 10 months in her neurological age in the last 6 months. She has now achieved a neurological age of 44.4 months compared with her chronological age of 80.3 months. Rosa has been in the program for 44 months (since 2003). In this time she has grown 41 months in her neurological age. This means that since starting the program her growth has been almost 100%.

We are aware that maybe in the future there will be years of less growth and that sometimes it will be difficult to achieve one or another goal. But we are very happy with the excellent results that we have achieved up till this moment. Rosa has given a lot on her part. Her motivation is enormous. She is a great fighter.

Conferences (Tuesday and Wednesday):

Tuesday and Wednesday we attended, as always, the conferences.

As a special prize Rosa attended part of the conference in the auditorium when they read the results of all the children. She did it with pride and was able to remain calm the whole time.

This was our sixth series of conferences and with it we graduated to the level of parents. We will still attend two more sets of conferences, but we have concluded the course “Development of the child's brain” and we are now qualified to apply all of the programs to our daughter at home.

We had a beautiful graduation ceremony in the presence of Glenn Doman, his wife and a large part of the dear staff of the Institutes. At the end of the ceremony, Janet Doman, director of the Institutes read the following significant poem:

Janet Doman, director of the Institutes

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN
(Robert Frost)

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

The new program (Thursday and Friday)

The new physical program:

Rosa will now have a new program that includes walks in the kato device, and an hour of uphill and downhill on special stairs built to combat rigorously her posture problems while walking. Our goal for the last year has been for Rosa to be able to block her knees. Even with many advances, the results have not been sufficiently satisfactory.

She will also continue with hangings and deep tactile stimulation

Indications for the new deep tactile stimulation program

The new physiological program:

The diet during this period will exclude baking powder, reducing the source of carbohydrates to purely vegetables. We will also use new supplements (enzymes) to achieve a better digestion and others to improve her function hepatica. Rosa will continue with the programs of oxygen enrichment (respiratory machine, respiratory masks and inhalations of O2/CO2) and will continue doing 6 cross patterning sessions of 5 minutes every day.

The new intellectual program:

This part is easier every time. A year or two ago it was a big headache to prepare all the intellectual materials, but now it doesn't take long. Rosa is now an excellent reader and can read one commercial book daily. To strengthen the English and German languages she will read articles from the Encarta encyclopedia in both languages and once a week she will be able to choose one of the texts read to write a summary using facilitated communication. We will continue with the intelligence Bits program and will now put more emphasis in the math program.

The new social program:

Rosa will continue with the law program that has brought her so many benefits. Each breaking of the law, for example: “Don't throw tantrums” is fined with a period of “Time out” of one minute in an isolated area.

The last period we started the “Civil code” program. This program is fun for the whole family because it establishes responsibilities, which when they are fulfilled, accumulate points. Rosa can buy privileges with her points earned. Rosa takes this program seriously which explains our numerous trips to museums or the zoo.

The program influences her behavior in a very positive way but requires much attention, discipline and constancy not only on Rosa 's part but on mom's part as well.

During this visit Rosa had the opportunity to meet Glenn Doman and personally give him the letter she wrote and some of her paintings. It was a very emotional moment for her and for all of us.

She also had some “chats” with other children. For the first time she could make friends and communicate with other kids who are in the same situation. In this way the internet is a blessing. Rosa will have more work writing and answering letters.

Thank you again for all the help you have given us to accomplish this trip to Philadelphia . We always try to put our part economically but it would be impossible to finance the appointments without your constant support. It's important and means a lot to us. It's a great motivation to do the program knowing that there are so many people that help.
